第18回オリンピック競技大会が1964（昭和39）年に東京で開催された。第2会場となったのが、駒沢オリンピック競技場だった。駒沢通りから横に長い階段を上ると右に見えてくるのが陸上競技場（村田政真設計）、正面には五重塔をモチーフにした管制塔、左手には、神社仏閣の屋根を思わせる反（そ）りを取り入れた体育館がある。
贅の極みを尽くした「欧州の古城」で昭和に浸る
